Every day, the CertiPUR-US® program hears from consumers asking questions about certified foam. One of the most common questions we get is: “I found a product I want to buy, and the company that makes it uses the CertiPUR-US logo, but they are not listed in your online directory or app (available from the Apple Store or Google Play). Is the polyurethane foam used in their products certified?”
The short answer is: We cannot vouch for companies that are not listed in the CertiPUR-US directory.
The brands and manufacturers listed in our directory have registered with our nonprofit organization and are making products using foam that has been certified by the CertiPUR-US program. Registration for brands and manufacturers is free, but legal documents are required by the company’s foam suppliers to ensure compliance. In addition, registered companies must adhere to the program’s terms of use.
Foam producers selling CertiPUR-US certified foam have submitted samples for content and emissions analysis by one of our approved, accredited laboratories. The foam in the bedding or upholstered furniture being sold by registered brands and manufacturers has been tested to meet the rigorous standards of CertiPUR-US for emissions, content and durability. Specifically, certified foam is:
- Made without formaldehyde
- Made without ozone depleters
- Made without phthalates regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
- Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals
- Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
- Screened for relevant chemicals, including flame retardants, that are classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins and are harmful to human health
A brand or manufacturer may be buying foam that is certified and not have taken the step of registering with CertiPUR-US, but the only way to verify use of certified foam is by using our online directory.
Consumers who see a company using the CertiPUR-US name or logo that is not listed in our online directory can let us know by reporting misuse. Our compliance team will try their best to reach out to the company. Unfortunately, many sellers are impossible to reach—particularly many who sell on Amazon. That’s why just seeing our logo or being told the foam is certified is not proof-positive. Always check our directory or app to confirm whether a company is using certified foam.
Buying mattresses or upholstered furniture can feel a little overwhelming when there are so many choices to make. You want style. You want comfort. You want to feel good about a purchase you make with your hard-earned money. Get peace of mind by confirming that the foam inside is certified right from the source!
Note: For bedding and upholstered furniture companies selling products containing certified foam, check our directory to be sure your company is still listed. Quite a few companies were recently removed from the directory because they missed the annual renewal date on January 31, 2025. Companies can be added back into the directory for free, but they must complete the registration paperwork, and CertiPUR-US administrators must verify the company is purchasing foam from a participating foam producer.
