If you are part of the growing movement of consumers who want to know all you can about the items you buy for yourself, your family and your home, you'll take comfort in knowing that home furnishings carrying the CertiPUR-US seal contain flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) cushioning products that have been tested and certified by independent laboratories.

CertiPUR-US is like having a health check-up for foam. The foam is examined and put through a series of scientific tests -- to be sure it meets the strict voluntary standards of the CertiPUR-US program. The tests evaluate foam content and important durability factors. Only foam products that have been tested and approved are certified by CertiPUR-US.

CertiPUR-US approved foams are: Emissions tested Content tested Low emission (VOCs) for indoor air quality Made without prohibited phthalates Made without ozone depleters (no CFCs) Made without mercury, lead or heavy metals Made without formaldehyde Made without methylene chloride Made without PBDEs Durability and performance tested

The global foam industry developed the voluntary CertiPUR-US guidelines with the guidance of industry leaders, scientists, consumer advocates and environmentalists around the world. Foam is used in hundreds of different consumer products to provide comfort, support, safety and durability. It's one of the most versatile materials ever created.

At this time, only the foams that are used in the cushioning of upholstered furniture and bedding can become certified. The first foams to be certified have recently been announced. Soon, you'll be able to identify products with certified foam by looking for the CertiPUR-US seal.
